Previous edition
Copacabana's Réveillon is the world's biggest New Year's party, and it's free. From the afternoon of December 31 the beach fills with people in white, stages host concerts along the sand and at midnight fireworks launch from barges along the 4 km (2.5 mi) beach.
The 2026/27 line-up is usually announced in mid-November (tentative). What we do know: traffic is restricted across the neighborhood, the metro runs with the Passaporte Réveillon QR pass and you'll want to arrive early. Reviewed Sep 2026.

Logistics: getting there, staying, getting back
Days before: get your Passaporte Réveillon
From 7 p.m. on the 31st, Copacabana stations only admit riders with the Passaporte QR, sold on the MetrôRio app/site. Buy it early.
Afternoon: arrive early
4–8 p.m.Streets close to traffic by mid-afternoon and taxis/Ubers get pushed far away. Aim to be in the area before 7–8 p.m.
Evening: pick your spot
It's most crowded by the main stage; a bit farther away (toward Post 5 or Leme) there's usually more room, and you'll still see the fireworks since they launch along the whole beach.
Midnight: fireworks and 7 waves
00:00About 12 minutes of fireworks (based on last year). Then into the sea to jump waves — carefully, currents are strong at night.
Getting back: take it slow
1–4 a.m.The metro gets slammed right after midnight. Stay a while or walk toward Ipanema or Botafogo before looking for a ride.
