Rio Nightlife: Samba, Lapa and Where to Go Out

Rio nights start on the street: an ice-cold beer at a boteco (neighborhood bar) or an open-air samba circle, and only later, if you want, a club. It's casual, cheap if you know where to go and full of live music.

Pedra do Sal

A stone stairway in the Saúde district where musicians and hundreds of people gather around a table. The samba circle is free, running Friday to Monday from 6 p.m.; Monday is the most traditional. Buy beer from street vendors and chip in when the musicians pass the hat.

Lapa

Under the Arches and along Rua do Lavradio you'll find samba houses with live music; circles start between 9 and 11 p.m. and clubs fill up after 1 a.m. Some venues charge a cover and others are free, so check their socials before you go.

Gafieira

Rio's ballroom tradition: partner samba with a live band. Many venues offer a quick class before the dance — perfect if you've never danced.

Botecos

Plastic tables on the sidewalk, ice-cold beer and bar snacks (codfish fritters, pastel, pork cracklings). This is where locals actually go out.

Funk carioca is Rio's soundtrack. As a visitor, the easiest way in is funk nights at Circo Voador and Fundição Progresso (Lapa) or South Zone clubs, with tickets, security and easy Uber pickup.

Parties inside communities are part of local culture but aren't a tourist show: if you're curious, go only with a resident who invites you — never on your own or with an improvised “guide” who approaches you on the street.
